Caring for it

Keep dry; wipe after wear; pouch provided.

What these pieces are

Brass or alloy with a plated finish — gold, silver-tone or oxidised depending on the piece. Every product page lists exactly what that piece is made of. This is plated fashion jewellery, not solid gold and not hallmarked silver, and we do not pretend otherwise. "Oxidised" describes the finish, not the metal underneath.

The five rules

  • Last on, first off. Put them on after perfume, moisturiser, hairspray and make-up, and take them off before anything else.
  • Keep them dry. Off before a shower, a swim, the gym or the kitchen. Water and sweat are what take a plated finish down fastest, in that order.
  • Wipe after wearing. A dry, soft cloth. Ten seconds. This is the one that makes the most difference and the one everyone skips.
  • Store them in the pouch. Not loose in a box with other pieces — metal against metal scratches plating, and an open box lets air at them.
  • No polish, no cleaner, no toothpaste. Silver dip and metal polish strip plating rather than clean it, and they take an oxidised finish off in one go.

What oxidised finish does over time

Oxidised is a deliberately darkened surface, with the raised detail left bright. It is meant to look worn, which is why tribal and temple work is almost always oxidised. Over months the high points brighten further as they rub against skin and fabric, and the recesses stay dark. Most people prefer it after a year.

If it dulls all over rather than unevenly, that is usually a film rather than the finish going. Wipe it firmly with a dry cloth — not a wet one — and it generally comes back.

If the finish does go

Plating is a finish, not a metal, and on any plated piece it wears eventually — faster on a hoop that rubs against a collar than on a stud. Following the rules above is what makes the difference between months and years.

If a finish goes unusually early, message us on WhatsApp with a photo and your order number. We will look at it honestly and tell you what we can do. We would rather say that than print a guarantee we cannot stand behind.

Sensitive ears

If you know some metals do not agree with you, message us before you order and we will tell you which pairs to avoid — the screw-back posts on the heavier pieces are the ones in contact with skin longest.

Travelling with them

Take the pouch. A jhumka's fringe tangles with anything it shares a bag with, and a bent bead chain is the one thing we cannot straighten for you.
